BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has claimed that the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur was intentional, accusing the government of negligence for not arranging his treatment abroad.
Abbas made the remarks after visiting Nur at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday, where he spoke to doctors and family members.
“The assault on Nur was clearly premeditated. He is still bleeding from his nose. The motive, those behind it, and their objectives must be uncovered through investigation, and justice must be ensured. He should be flown abroad immediately for advanced treatment,” said Mirza.
Mirza Abbas expressed hope that Nur would make a full recovery and return to the political stage.
On August 29, clashes between activists of Jatiya Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad erupted in Bijoynagar under Ramna, leaving several people injured, including Nur and the party’s General Secretary Rashed Khan. Nur, critically wounded, was admitted to the ICU of DMCH.
Abbas warned that failure to identify those responsible would suggest the government had lost control over its “command.”
Asked about the recent shrine attack in Rajbari, the BNP leader said, “These are not isolated incidents. In the run-up to the election, you will see more of such events. This is a deliberate attempt to derail the polls. A section is determined to ensure that February’s election does not take place.”
“The country is not functioning in a normal process. Instability prevails everywhere, and the system of governance is on the verge of collapse,” he added.
