Bangladesh delivered a commanding 5–1 victory over Kazakhstan in the Asia Cup placement match at Rajgir, Bihar, on Thursday, keeping their hopes alive for a place in the Hockey World Cup qualifiers for the first time.
The result came as Bangladesh capitalised on Pakistan’s withdrawal from the tournament, while Oman also did not participate, allowing Kazakhstan to take their place.
Bangladesh dominated from the start. Ashraful Islam opened the scoring from a penalty corner in the 10th minute, giving his side a 1–0 lead in the first quarter. He added a second from a penalty stroke in the second quarter, and Roman Sarkar scored shortly before half-time to make it 3–0.
After the break, Roman scored again from a penalty corner, followed by a field goal from Ali Tayyeb, putting Bangladesh 5–0 ahead. Kazakhstan pulled one goal back in the 37th minute, but no further goals were scored, and the match ended 5–1.
The win means Bangladesh will now play Japan in the Asia Cup fifth-place match on Sunday. A victory there could secure them a direct spot in the World Cup qualifiers. If they lose, Bangladesh would have to face Pakistan in a three-match playoff series, with the winner advancing to the qualifiers.
According to the International Hockey Federation, the Asia Cup champion qualifies directly for the World Cup, while teams finishing second to fifth will compete in the World Cup qualifiers. The winner of the playoff between Pakistan and the sixth-placed Asia Cup team will also join the qualifiers. The final number of Asian teams advancing is yet to be confirmed, so Bangladesh’s qualification is still provisional.
