380 killed in road accidents nationwide in July: BRTA

A total of 427 road accidents occurred across the country in July, leaving 380 people dead and 542 others injured, according to a report by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

The report, signed by BRTA Chairman Abu Momtaz Saad Uddin Ahmed, said the figures were compiled from the authority’s divisional offices.

Dhaka division recorded the highest number of accidents with 113 crashes that killed 103 people and injured 151. In Chattogram, 100 accidents claimed 89 lives and injured 92. Rajshahi reported 49 accidents with 53 fatalities and 45 injuries, while Khulna had 44 accidents resulting in 43 deaths and 50 injuries.

In Barishal, 25 accidents left 14 dead and 46 injured. Sylhet saw 30 accidents with 26 deaths and 99 injuries, Rangpur recorded 43 accidents that killed 38 and injured 48, and Mymensingh had 23 accidents with 14 deaths and 11 injuries.

The report noted that 642 vehicles were involved in these accidents, including 117 buses and minibuses, 133 trucks and covered vans, 116 motorcycles, 40 pickups, 15 microbuses, 17 private cars or jeeps, 37 autorickshaws, 14 battery-run rickshaws, 10 easy bikes, 9 vans, 6 tractors, 1 ambulance, and 127 other vehicles.

Of the 380 fatalities, 83 were in motorcycle accidents, 85 in crashes involving other vehicles, 48 in trucks or covered vans, 47 in buses or minibuses, 28 in autorickshaws, 19 in microbuses, 18 in pickups, 17 in vans, 16 in battery-run rickshaws, 15 in easy bikes, 3 in private cars or jeeps, and 1 in a tractor accident.
