Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), in a joint drive with police and Sylhet district administration, seized 200,000 cubic feet of illegally stockpiled stones from the border area of Utmachhara in Companiganj upazila on Tuesday.
According to a BGB press release, the operation was carried out in Adarshgram village in the morning, during which the stones were seized. Commander of Sylhet BGB 48-Battalion Lt Col Md Nazmul Haque and Executive Magistrate Ebrahim Iqbal Chowdhury led the drive.
The commander said the Utmachhara area is known as tourist post and is naturally rich in sand and stones. Some local unscrupulous groups have been illegally extracting stones from the area for the last few years and stockpiled those in Adarshgram for smuggling but due to strict surveillance and patrolling by BGB, they failed to move the stones across the border.
He said that BGB has been working to ensure border security, prevent smuggling, maintain law and order, and protect national resources.
