World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the US Open mixed doubles competition, a day after illness forced him to retire from the Cincinnati Open final.

Sinner, who had been due to partner Czech player Katerina Siniakova in the reimagined two-day mixed doubles event, ended his final against Carlos Alcaraz on Monday after just five games. Struggling in the extreme heat, the Italian trailed 5-0 in the opening set before deciding he could not continue.

The reigning Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open champion later confirmed his withdrawal from New York in a message to fans.

“Yesterday I did not feel great and I am really sorry to disappoint you. Thank you so much to everyone supporting me on-site and from home, your support means the world,” Sinner wrote on X.

He also congratulated Alcaraz, adding: “Congrats to @carlosalcaraz and his team, you are having an incredible season and I wish you all the best for what is ahead. Now it is time to rest a couple of days before getting back to work.”

The mixed doubles competition began on Tuesday with a field of 16 teams. The Sinner-Siniakova entry was replaced in the draw by Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison, who will now face Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev in the first round.

The main singles draw at Flushing Meadows is due to begin on Sunday.
