Wicketkeeper-batter Nigar Sultana Joty, pacer Marufa Akter and leg-spinner Fahima Khatun starred as Team Red claimed a 32-run victory over Team Green in the opening match of the Women’s Challenge Cup at BKSP-3 on Monday.
Put in to bat, Team Red were dismissed for 144 in 47.4 overs. Captain Joty anchored the innings with a patient 78 from 131 balls, standing tall as wickets tumbled around her. The rest of the batting order offered little resistance, leaving Team Red with a modest total.
In reply, Team Green were bundled out for 112 in 40.1 overs. Marufa produced a fiery spell of fast bowling to finish with figures of 4 for 13, while Fahima’s leg-spin proved equally effective as she took 4 for 20. Their combined effort of eight wickets ensured a comfortable win for Team Red.
The Challenge Cup is being staged as a tri-series between Team Red, Team Green and the men’s Under-15 national side. The tournament forms part of Bangladesh’s preparation for the ICC Women’s World Cup, which will take place in India and Sri Lanka from 30 September to 2 November.
