Farooq: A shining star in the world of Bangladeshi films

The birthday of legendary film actor Farooq, best known for his iconic role as ‘Mia Bhai’, was yesterday. From Akbar Hossain Pathan, he rose to become the beloved ‘Farooq’ of millions. 

Farooq was not only an actor but also a prominent figure in culture, politics and social thought.

Born on August 18, 1948, he studied at Dhaka College before entering the world of cinema, driven by his passion for acting.

During the Liberation War of 1971, he played an active role; an experience that greatly shaped his personality and public image.

Farooq made his screen debut in ‘Jolchhobi’ (1971), earning immediate attention. He went on to star in numerous timeless films, including ‘Abar Tora Manush Ho’, ‘Sujan Sokhi’, ‘Lathial’, ‘Noyon Moni’, ‘Sareng Bou’, ‘Golapi Ekhon Traine’ and ‘Mia Bhai’. 

These roles cemented his status as one of the leading heroes of Bengali cinema’s golden era.

Beyond films, Farooq was deeply involved in politics as a member of the Bangladesh Awami League. In the 2018 national election, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Dhaka-17 constituency.

Known for his humility and humanity, Farooq was a vocal supporter of his colleagues and the artistic community. A devoted family man, he drew strength and inspiration from his wife, Farhana Pathan, and their children.

Though widely acclaimed as an actor, he won the National Film Award only twice. One for Best Supporting Actor for ‘Lathial’ in 1975 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Farooq had been receiving treatment at home and abroad since 2012. Following surgery in 2021, his health deteriorated and he was admitted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.

He passed away in the hospital at 10:00 am local time on Monday, May 15, 2023.
