Ex-student leader Apu confesses to extortion of former AL lawmaker

‎The expelled student leader Jane Alam Apu has confessed of demanding extortion from ex-Awami League lawmaker Shammi Ahmed.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam recorded his confessional statement Apu, an expelled joint convener of the Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad, and ordered him to be sent to jail on Wednesday.

‎‎Apu voluntarily agreed to give a confessional statement after he was produced before the court following the end of his remand period. ‎Earlier on August 2, the court granted a four-day remand for him. Apu was arrested from Wari in Dhaka on August 1.

‎Meanwhile, Siddique Abu Zafar, husband of ex-lawmaker Shammi Ahmed, filed the case with Gulshan Police Station, accusing six activists of Students Against Discrimination and 10 to 12 unnamed persons.

‎According to the case documents, on July 17, accused Jane Alam Apu along with other members of student organization, including Abdur Razzak Riyad, an expelled member of Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad, went to their residence in Gulshan and demanded Tk 50 lakh.

‎As the complainant refused to the extortion money, they labeled him as an associate of the Awami League and had threatened to have him arrested using police pressure, which compelled Abu Zafar to give them Tk 10 lakh.

‎But the accused again returned to the ex-MP’s residence on July 19 but fled as the law enforcers were informed.

‎The complaint also mentioned that Riyad, along with his associates, went their residence again for the remaining Tk 40 lakh and threatened to hand him over to the police if he didn’t comply.

However, on information police arrived scene and arrested five individuals, including Riyad on July 26. Riyad later confessed in court on August 3.
