A major train accident was narrowly avoided in Natore’s Naldanga upazila after miscreants attempted to sabotage the railway line by locking an iron chain around the tracks near Madhnagar Railway Station.
The incident occurred around 10:00pm on Sunday night in the Palashitola area, just south of the station.
According to police and local sources, a pedestrian noticed the chain and lock wrapped tightly around the railway line and immediately informed nearby residents. The news was quickly relayed to the police and railway authorities. Officers from Naldanga Police Station and the station master rushed to the scene and, with the help of a mechanic, removed the chain.
As a result of the attempted sabotage, several trains including Simanta Express, Nilsagar Express, and Ekota Express were delayed for several hours. However, train services returned to normal later in the night.
Madhnagar Station’s on-duty master Uzzal Ali said, “As soon as we received the information, we rushed to the spot and cut the chain and lock. We suspect it was a deliberate act of sabotage.”
Naldanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam said police removed the chain from the tracks upon receiving the report. “We are investigating to find out who was behind this incident and will take legal action against those responsible,” he added.
