Saint Martin’s Island has been facing severe disruptions due to rough seas and adverse weather conditions.
For the past three days, all types of vessels have been suspended on the Teknaf-Saint Martin’s sea route, resulting in a shortage of essential goods on the island.
Additionally, high tides have caused saline water to flood over a hundred homes as it flowed at levels higher than normal.

Fayezul Islam, acting chairman of Saint Martin’s Union Parishad, said, “The new moon’s high tide has caused water levels to rise 1-3 feet above normal, flooding various parts of the island with saline water.”
“More than a hundred homes have been submerged, and coastal erosion has been reported due to the impact of the waves,” he added.
Habibur Rahman, general secretary of the Saint Martin’s Market Committee, expressed concern, saying, “With the suspension of vessels, essential items have run out in the market. If food supplies from Teknaf don’t arrive soon, there will be a severe shortage.”
“We urgently request the government to deploy sea trucks and Sea ambulances to address the situation.”
In response to the weather conditions, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a number 3 warning for Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports.
Additionally, all fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to take shelter until further notice.
“Due to the ongoing adverse weather, all vessels have been suspended. Services will resume once conditions improve,” confirmed Teknaf UNO Sheikh Ehsan Uddin.
