Bangladesh controlled possession and created a series of opportunities against Bhutan, but their lack of a finishing touch left their SAFF Championship opener goalless at half-time at the National Stadium in Dhaka on Thursday.
The hosts had 64% of the ball and attempted 12 shots during the opening 45 minutes. Yet they could not find a way past Bhutan’s defence, with Bishwanath Ghosh missing several chances while playing in an unfamiliar centre-forward role.
The match also began with an unexpected change to Bangladesh’s starting XI. Topu Barman had been announced as captain and was included in the team sheet, but suffered an injury during the warm-up. The team management replaced him with midfielder Quazem Shah, while Jamal Bhuyan took over the captaincy.
Bangladesh started on the front foot and created an opening in the sixth minute. Rakib Hossain delivered a cross from the right towards Bishwanath, but a Bhutan defender intervened before the ball could reach him. Jamal collected the clearance outside the area and struck powerfully, only for the Bhutan defence to block his attempt.
Bishwanath had another opportunity in the 18th minute. Rakib again supplied the cross, this time finding the Bangladesh defender at the far post. Bishwanath connected with a header but sent it wide.
The missed chances continued. In the 25th minute, Bishwanath found himself with another opportunity in front of goal, but his effort from close range went outside the post.
His biggest chance arrived in the 39th minute. With only the Bhutan goalkeeper to beat, he attempted an angled shot but failed to keep it on target. The sequence highlighted Bangladesh’s difficulty in converting their attacking pressure into a breakthrough.
Bishwanath was being used as an emergency striker rather than in his usual defensive position. While his movement helped Bangladesh occupy attacking areas, the repeated misses underlined the difficulty of relying on a player whose regular role is not as a centre-forward.
Bangladesh also came close from a set-piece shortly before the interval. Jamal took a free-kick in the 44th minute and Shamit Shome headed the ball across the goalmouth. However, Zidane Alexander Yousuf and Saad Uddin were unable to make contact.
Bhutan offered little attacking threat during the half. Their first shot on target came in the 40th minute, when goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon dealt with it comfortably.
There was also a lengthy stoppage after Bhutan’s Orgyen Wangchuk suffered a head injury following a collision with a Bangladesh defender. He received treatment on the touchline before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
