NCP Convener Nahid Islam has said the government cannot evade responsibility by branding workers’ legitimate movement a conspiracy, blaming its lack of proper planning for the current unrest.
“The workers’ movement is justified. The situation has emerged because the government lacks proper planning. A legitimate movement cannot be dismissed as a conspiracy,” he told journalists on Tuesday.
Nahid was speaking ahead of a discussion meeting organised by the NCP’s Pabna district unit at the Pabna Shilpakala Academy auditorium. The meeting focused on reviewing organisational progress and planning for upcoming local government elections.
He said the government would also have to take responsibility if people associated with the fascist forces had infiltrated the workers’ movement and attempted to create disorder.
Describing such a development as a failure of intelligence activities, Nahid alleged that the government was using intelligence agencies to suppress opposition parties.
He questioned why the government had not presented any intelligence information to the public about those who had killed people before fleeing to India.
Nahid said the interim government had faced around 500 movements, arguing that protests would subside only if people had confidence in the government.
“People have no confidence in this government because it has betrayed the mandate of 70 per cent of the people,” he said.
He also alleged that the government had broken all the commitments it made before the election and included in its election manifesto.
On the latest increase in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices, the NCP convener said cylinder gas prices had gone up again on Monday.
He claimed that cylinders previously priced at Tk1,800 were being sold for Tk2,500 in the open market and warned that prices could rise further following the latest increase.
Nahid called on people to take to the streets, saying the government must be held accountable through public demonstrations.
