Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have detained an Indian national along with 813.50 grams of gold paste, valued at approximately Tk1.55 crore, while he was attempting to smuggle the consignment into India through his rectum via the Bhomra border in Satkhira.
The details were confirmed in a press release issued at around 10pm on Monday, signed by Lt Col Kazi Ashikur Rahman, Commanding Officer of Satkhira 33 BGB Battalion.
The detainee has been identified as Jahir Shah Golam Hossain, 43, son of Golam Hossain Sher Khan, residing in the Chhitacamp area of Mumbai, India. He holds an Indian passport.
According to BGB, a special operational team from Bhomra Border Outpost (BOP) conducted a raid at the BGB checkpost adjacent to Bhomra immigration following intelligence that an Indian passport holder was planning to smuggle a large gold consignment from Bangladesh to India while evading customs duties.
Officers detained Golam Hossain on suspicion.
During preliminary interrogation, he initially denied any involvement in gold smuggling. He was taken to a nearby hospital for a physical examination, where two packets of gold paste weighing 813.50 grams were detected inside his rectum and seized.
Confirming the operation, Lt Col Kazi Ashikur Rahman said that proper legal measures are being taken against the detainee, and he has been handed over to Satkhira Sadar Police Station.
