A new wage board has been formed to set wages for garment workers, Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury said.
He announced the development around 11:30am on Sunday.
The minister said the government had formed a six-member wage board in accordance with the Labour Act, with Senior District Judge Sheikh Ashfakur Rahman serving as its chairman. The board will become operational from Sunday.
He said the board would hold its first meeting as soon as possible and, following discussions, announce a decision on the minimum wage for workers.
“I hope the workers will now end their street protests, return to their respective workplaces and resume work,” he added.
On Saturday, the minister said the wage board would be formed on Sunday following a meeting with representatives of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) at the Labour Building in Bijoynagar, Dhaka.
Over the past several days, garment workers had staged protests and blocked roads in Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11, Mirpur-12 and surrounding areas of the capital, demanding that the minimum monthly wage be raised to Tk30,000.
