AC Milan claimed a 3-1 victory over Inter Milan in the Milan derby on Sunday, while Roma thrashed Udinese 5-2 in another Serie A clash.
Diego Moreira starred for Milan with a goal and two assists as his side secured their fourth straight victory over their city rivals.
The win lifted Milan to fourth place in the Serie A table, four points behind leaders Lazio and Inter, who have 25 points each. Milan made a flying start at San Siro when Christian Pulisic headed home the opening goal in the fourth minute.
Adrien Rabiot doubled the lead just six minutes later as Milan took control of the match. However, Inter fought back through Alessandro Bastoni, who scored in the 22nd minute to reduce the gap.
Inter pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Milan struck again just before halftime. Moreira scored with a brilliant free kick to restore Milan’s two goal lead and put his side in a strong position.
Neither team managed to score after the break as Milan held on for an important derby victory. The result came during a week when both Milan clubs announced plans to build a new shared stadium with a capacity of 71,500 to replace San Siro.
Meanwhile, Roma produced a strong attacking display to beat Udinese 5-2 away from home.
Roma scored four goals inside the opening 37 minutes to take complete control of the match. Bryan Cristante opened the scoring with a header in the 10th minute.
Rodrigo Mora doubled the lead in the 31st minute after receiving a pass from Cristante. Just two minutes later, Donyell Malen scored his eighth Serie A goal of the season to make it 3-0.
Evan Ndicka then headed home from a corner to give Roma a four goal lead before halftime. Udinese showed some fight after the break as Nicolo Zaniolo and Matteo Palma scored to reduce the deficit.
Daniele Ghilardi then added Roma’s fifth goal, his first in Serie A, to complete the victory.
“If we play like this there is a chance,” Cristante said.
“The league is not easy and it’s nice to stay in (the title race). We are scoring a lot and that is very important.”
Roma moved to third place with 24 points, while Udinese remained second from bottom with five.
Elsewhere, Bologna beat Monza 2-1 to secure their third straight league victory.
Tommaso Pobega and Federico Bernardeschi scored for Bologna after Gustavo Varela had given Monza an early lead from the penalty spot. Monza had another chance to score from the spot late in the match, but Patrick Cutrone missed the penalty.
The win moved Bologna to ninth place in the table.
