Actor Prakash Raj has paid a professional price for openly expressing his political views, with several film offers and advertising assignments reportedly withdrawn, his wife Pony Varma has said.
According to Hindustan Times, speaking to Prema The Journalist, Pony recalled how the 2017 murder of journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh deeply affected the actor and strengthened his resolve to speak out.
She said she was initially frightened by her husband’s outspoken nature, particularly because of the possible risks to their safety. However, Gauri’s death left Prakash devastated and prompted him to become more vocal.
Pony said Prakash had faced bans in the Telugu film industry and lost several professional opportunities because of his convictions.
She claimed some people withdrew from film projects even after paying him an advance, while advertising assignments also disappeared.
Despite the setbacks, Prakash has refused to compromise his beliefs. Pony said he believes in standing by his convictions, even when doing so affects his career.
She also recalled his participation in student protests in Delhi following the NEET paper leak, saying she was frightened by the police action but admired his decision to stand alongside the protesters.
Prakash and Gauri had been close friends for more than 35 years before she was shot dead outside her Bengaluru home in 2017.
Following her death, the actor began using the hashtag #JustAsking to raise questions about social and political issues.
