The government has suspended Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Abdullah Al Zahir following allegations of drug use and DJ parties at his house in the Police Housing Residential Area in capital’s Purbachal.
He has also been attached to the Police Special Training School (PSTS) in Betbunia, Rangamati.
The decision was announced on Saturday through a notification issued by the Police-1 Branch of the Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
According to the notification, a team from the North Division of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) raided Zahir’s residence in the Police Housing residential area under Bhatara Police Station in the capital on 19 October.
The DB said drug consumption and a DJ party were taking place at the residence during the raid.
Police seized cannabis, yaba tablets, alcohol and equipment used for consuming yaba. Various media outlets and social media platforms reported that 85 people, including 26 women, were detained during the operation.
The notification, signed by Ministry of Home Affairs Senior Secretary Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, said the incident had created a negative public perception of the police and severely damaged the image of Bangladesh Police.
It described such activities as a breach of proper conduct and departmental discipline.
Under Rule 12(1) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018, Abdullah Al Zahir has been temporarily suspended with effect from 25 October.
