Overcoming her family’s objections, 24-year-old Jumratun Nesa Borsha had married Nabid Hossain out of love.
However, the relationship soon turned into a tragic ordeal of relentless dowry demands and physical abuse by her husband.
On Tuesday night, subjected to severe torture in a rented flat in the capital’s Manipuri Para under Tejgaon Police Station, a desperate Borsha placed a video call to her father, pleading, “Father, come save me.”
Her panic-stricken parents rushed to the residence within 15 to 20 minutes, only to find that their daughter was no longer alive.
A tragic end before the formal wedding
Borsha and Nabid had tied the knot in an informal, domestic ceremony on 7 October 2025. The family had planned to hold the formal wedding celebrations in coming December or January, but Borsha met her tragic death before those plans could materialise.
According to her family, Nabid had been putting continuous pressure on her for dowry ever since the marriage, and he had also taken money from her father at various times under the pretext of business.
On Tuesday night, following the abuse, Borsha made her final video call to her father. When her parents arrived at the residence shortly after, they were informed that Borsha had committed suicide.
A history of abuse and police action
Borsha was subsequently taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor declared her dead.
Refusing to accept the claim of suicide, her family alleged that she was tortured and choked to death over dowry demands. Her mother, Hasina Akter, revealed that before the marriage, Nabid had forced her daughter to stop her studies.
Within months of their marriage, Nabid had beaten Borsha so severely that her head was fractured, requiring stitches at the hospital.
Subjected to repeated torture, Borsha had called her father multiple times begging him to take her home, though she would later return to her husband again.
Following the incident, Borsha’s father, Sheikh Monowar Hossain, filed a murder case at Tejgaon Police Station as the plaintiff on Tuesday night.
Tejgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muniruzzaman confirmed that Nabid Hossain frequently beat Borsha demanding dowry, adding that injury marks were found on her body.
Police subsequently arrested Nabid from the hospital, and an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
