Actors’ Equity Bangladesh has stepped in to ensure veteran actor Somu Chowdhury receives medical care, taking full financial and operational responsibility for his treatment after his family struggled to meet the costs.
The artists’ organisation has begun arranging the necessary medical procedures and related logistics after obtaining formal consent from the actor’s family.
Concern over Chowdhury’s health grew recently when several videos showing his deteriorating physical condition circulated on social media. The footage prompted colleagues, fellow artists and well-wishers to raise concerns, particularly after reports emerged of the family’s financial difficulties.
Rashed Mamun Apu, general secretary of Actors’ Equity Bangladesh, confirmed that the organisation would cover all expenses related to the actor’s treatment.
He said the family’s formal permission had enabled them to move forward with the necessary arrangements.
This is the second time the organisation has intervened to support Chowdhury. Around three years ago, members came to his aid after finding him in a disoriented state in Gafargaon and arranged for his safe relocation.
However, they could not proceed with a structured medical care plan at the time because his family had not given consent.
