Bangladesh lost their last seven wickets for just 59 runs in the morning session to be bowled out for 272 on the second day of the opening Test against West Indies in Mirpur on Thursday, with left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican claiming his fourth five-wicket haul.

Shadman Islam’s 105 had put the hosts in a strong position overnight, but the lower order failed to build on his century. Bangladesh resumed at 213/3 and reached 245/5 by the drinks break before the innings unravelled.

Shadman, who had been unbeaten on 99 overnight, completed his third Test century with a double off debutant Joshua Bishop. He became the fifth batter in Test history to convert an overnight 99 not out into a hundred, and only the second Bangladeshi after Mushfiqur Rahim to achieve the feat.

His innings ended at 105 off 234 balls, including 11 fours, when Bishop trapped him lbw. Shadman reviewed the decision, but the Decision Review System showed three reds.

Towhid Hridoy, who had retired hurt on 42 on the opening day, returned to bat but failed to add to his score. Bishop bowled him with a straight delivery.

Litton Das offered some resistance, remaining unbeaten on 34 after being struck on his right knee by a good-length delivery from Jayden Seales. Mehidy Hasan Miraz made 15 off 39 balls, hitting two fours, before Warrican bowled him after beating his bat and finding the gap between bat and pad.

The tail then folded quickly. Shamar Joseph dismissed Nayeem Hasan and Hasan Mahmud, while Warrican removed Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam in successive dismissals to complete his five-for.

Earlier, Shadman had anchored Bangladesh’s innings after the hosts elected to bat. He shared 59 runs with Mominul Haque for the second wicket and an 88-run stand with Hridoy for the fourth.

Mominul scored 28 off 51 balls before being caught by Shamar Joseph while attempting to loft Warrican over mid-off. During his innings, Mominul became the third Bangladeshi to reach 11,000 first-class runs, after Tushar Imran and Naeem Islam.
