After Bangladesh were bowled out for 272 in their first innings, West Indies reached 89 for one at tea on the second day of the opening Test in Mirpur on Thursday, with John Campbell striking his sixth Test half-century and pacer Hasan Mahmud providing the hosts with an early breakthrough.

Campbell was unbeaten on 53 off 65 balls, while Tagenarine Chanderpaul was on 21 off 77 deliveries as the visitors trailed by 183 runs. Campbell and Chanderpaul added 60 runs for the second wicket. West Indies made steady progress in the second session, which ended after 27 overs when the umpires called tea under a cloudy sky and fading light. Slight rain had interrupted during the tea break.

Hasan struck shortly after lunch, having opener Brandon King edge a delivery to substitute wicketkeeper Jaker Ali Anik. King made 15 off 20 balls before departing.

Jaker was on the field after Litton Das sustained a contusion to his right elbow while batting and was kept under observation, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said.

Campbell had a couple of reprieves during the session. He inside-edged a delivery from Mehidy Hasan Miraz onto his pads, with the ball falling just short of the fielder at silly point. The right-hander was then dropped on 22 by pacer Shoriful Islam off his own bowling.

The opener made the most of his chances, using his feet against the spinners to find the boundaries and reach his third consecutive Test fifty.
