Tanvirul Islam, 26, a leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) who was injured during the July Mass Uprising, died while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) around 10am on Wednesday.
Chattogram City NCP Convenor Mir Shoaib confirmed the death on Thursday afternoon.
Tanvirul was a member of the NCP’s Chattogram City Convening Committee and joint member secretary of its Bayezid Thana Committee.
He was the son of Md Abu Yusuf of Hilpara village in Cumilla’s Laksam upazila. He had been living in a rented house owned by Jamal Uddin in the Textile area of Bayezid in Chattogram.
According to the NCP, Tanvirul sustained serious injuries during the July Mass Uprising and had suffered from recurring health problems since then.
His condition frequently deteriorated, sometimes after a week of relatively good health, forcing him to take several medicines regularly.
His prolonged illness prevented him from working properly, leaving him in severe financial difficulties.
Several party leaders said his persistent health problems, mounting medical expenses and loss of income had caused him severe mental distress.
Asked about the possible cause of death, Shoaib said Tanvirul might have suffered a heart attack due to an adverse reaction to taking multiple medicines together or complications arising from his prolonged illness and mental distress.
However, Shoaib said the party had no reliable information or evidence to support rumours that Tanvirul had died from poisoning.
Explaining the delay in the post-mortem examination, Shoaib said Tanvirul had died at 10am on Wednesday, which was a public holiday, and his family had taken time to decide whether an examination should be conducted.
He said the holiday had also created difficulties in arranging the necessary doctors at the hospital. The post-mortem examination was eventually completed at CMCH on Thursday morning.
Chattogram City NCP Member Secretary Arif Moinuddin said Tanvirul had sustained a gunshot wound during the July Mass Uprising.
A bullet had entered one side of his waist and exited through the other. He was officially listed among those injured during the uprising.
Moinuddin said Tanvirul often walked with a limp because of severe pain and sometimes cried in agony.
Shoaib said Chattogram District Administration Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Sharif Uddin was present at CMCH during the post-mortem examination and legal procedures to oversee the situation.
He said Sharif Uddin also provided necessary instructions regarding the funeral and burial arrangements.
However, Sharif Uddin could not be reached for comment despite repeated phone calls.
Tanvirul’s body was handed over to his family on Thursday afternoon following the completion of the post-mortem examination.
No separate funeral prayer was held in Chattogram. His relatives left with the body for Hilpara village in Cumilla’s Laksam upazila, where his funeral prayer and burial were scheduled to take place.
