An 11-year-old boy died following nasal polyp surgery at a private hospital in Savar on Wednesday afternoon, prompting relatives to vandalise the facility over allegations of medical negligence.
The incident occurred at Abbas Specialised Hospital Limited in the Genda area of Savar. The deceased was identified as Abraham, son of Alamin from Maniknagar under Singair Police Station in Manikganj.
According to relatives, Abraham was admitted to the hospital in the afternoon for surgery to remove nasal polyps. They alleged that he died immediately after the operation, performed by Suman Hossain, a doctor at the hospital.
The boy was subsequently taken to Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar, but was already dead when he arrived, the relatives said.
Angered by the death, family members and relatives vandalised the hospital premises. The surgeon, nurses and hospital authorities fled the facility following the incident, according to the relatives.
Police later arrived at the scene and recovered the child’s body.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Alam said legal action would be taken upon receiving a formal complaint from the family.
He added that preparations were under way to file a case with the police station.
