Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will undergo surgery after suffering a serious knee injury during his team’s 4-2 Champions League victory over Barcelona on Wednesday.

The Georgian international tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee and now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Kvaratskhelia suffered the injury in the second half while chasing back to tackle Barcelona’s Xavi Espart.

The 25-year-old landed awkwardly and immediately fell to the ground in pain. He held his right knee and needed help from the medical staff to leave the pitch shortly before the hour mark.

He could not put any weight on his injured leg as he made his way off the field.

Medical examinations later confirmed the ACL rupture, leaving PSG without one of their most important attacking players.

Kvaratskhelia has played a major role in PSG’s recent success, helping the French club win back-to-back Champions League titles.

He is also among the contenders for this year’s Ballon d’Or, which will be awarded on Monday. However, the Georgian was not the only PSG player to suffer an injury against Barcelona.

French forward Ousmane Dembele left the pitch during the first half with a thigh problem, while captain Marquinhos also suffered a similar injury.

PSG confirmed that both players would receive treatment over the coming weeks. The injuries have created fresh concerns for coach Luis Enrique, who has already taken steps to manage Dembele’s fitness.

The French international struggled with injuries last season, while similar problems also affected him during his time at Barcelona.

Enrique rested Dembele twice in Ligue 1 this season and carefully managed his playing time during the previous campaign.

Dembele enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career in 2024/25, playing 50 matches in a single campaign for the first time. His performances also helped him win the men’s Ballon d’Or.

Despite the injury setbacks, PSG continued their perfect start to this season’s Champions League with an impressive victory over Barcelona.

However, losing three important players in one match has left the defending European champions facing a difficult period as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
