President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday described the media as a key pillar of democracy, saying its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions could bring the greatest benefits to the people.
“The media has the greatest opportunity to play a positive role in a democratic system. When the media is democratic and works to advance the democratic system, it benefits the people the most,” he said.
The President made the remarks when a delegation of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), led by its President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mynul Hasan Sohel, paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban in the afternoon.
President’s Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam disclosed the details of the meeting.
Fakhrul urged journalists and their professional organisations to work together to protect the rights and welfare of media workers.
“All workers and organisations must unite and raise their voices to protect their professional interests,” he said.
He called for a stronger collective role in addressing unlawful dismissals of journalists, implementing the wage board and ensuring justice for violence against media workers.
During the meeting, the DRU delegation briefed the President on its organisational activities and welfare initiatives for members.
The delegation sought his cooperation in carrying out its activities smoothly and invited him to attend the organisation’s Best Reporting Award ceremony as chief guest.
Recalling his previous engagements with the DRU, Mirza Fakhrul expressed gratitude to journalists for their courageous role.
He assured the delegation of his support for the organisation’s development and expressed optimism about attending the award ceremony.
The President’s military secretary, press secretary and other senior officials attended the meeting.
