Bangladesh’s struggle to chase big ODI totals has become a concern for captain Litton Das, who believes the team’s limited batting depth is adding pressure on the top six when pursuing targets of 300 or more.

Bangladesh have shown they can post big scores when batting first, but have found it harder to match those totals in a chase. Litton acknowledged the problem ahead of Saturday’s tri-nation series opener against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi, saying the team are trying to find ways to overcome it.

“Whether you bat first or second, the runs have to be scored by the batters. The six batters who play have to take full responsibility, whether they bat first or second,” Litton said at the pre-match press conference.

The Bangladesh captain explained that chasing a known target of 300-plus often demands a more aggressive approach at certain stages, which can become difficult when the lower order cannot provide enough support.

“When you bat first, you don’t know what the target will be. But when you have to chase 300 or more, you need to play aggressively at some point. Our options are very limited because most of the time we play with six specialist batters. If the lower order cannot contribute in that way, the innings can stall. That can also put extra pressure on the batters,” he said.

Bangladesh are now trying to identify how to manage those situations better. The issue is not simply about scoring quickly, but also about maintaining momentum when the required rate rises and the top order needs support from the lower order.

Mosaddek Hossain could offer another option in that regard, with his ability against spin raised during the press conference. Litton welcomed the suggestion but pointed out that Mosaddek is also one of the team’s specialist batters.

“Of course, he is a good option,” Litton said.

Bangladesh open their tri-nation campaign against Zimbabwe on Saturday at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Afghanistan are the third team in the tournament.
