A 45-year-old vendor was shot and his son was severely hacked with sharp weapons during a violent attack in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area on Thursday night following an extortion dispute.
The victims have been identified as Sumon Ali, 45, and his son Fahim Hossain, 22, who are residents of the Boshirhat 40-Feet Garden City area in Mohammadpur and they operate a local potato and onion trading business.
The incident took place around 9:30pm under the Footover Bridge at the Mohammadpur Bus Stand Folpatti area during a gunfire clash.
Speaking from Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), the injured victims stated that a local gang of seven to eight extortionists—led by one Sabbir alongside Sohel, Romij, Rabbi alias ‘Jaura Rabbi’, Hridoy, and Munna—had been demanding extortion money from them.
When Sumon Ali refused to pay the extortion fee, the gang opened fire, shooting him below his left knee.
As his son Fahim rushed forward to defend his father, the assailants hacked him on the back with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene.
The victims described the attackers as local terrorists and extortionists who routinely intimidate residents and assault anyone who refuses their extortion demands.
Following the incident, multiple teams from Mohammadpur Police Station moved in and took up positions at the scene to secure the area.
Meanwhile, In-Charge of the DMCH Police Camp Md Habibur Rahman confirmed that Sumon Ali sustained a gunshot wound below his left knee while Fahim suffered a sharp weapon injury to his back, quoting the attending doctors.
Both of the injured are currently receiving treatment at DMCH’s emergency department.
