Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing filmmaking, and Bangladesh’s film industry needs to prepare for that shift through stronger policies, research and skills development, industry stakeholders said at a Dhaka roundtable.

The discussion, titled ‘AI and Film: Preparedness and Prospects of Bangladesh’s Film Industry’, took place on Saturday at the Bangladesh Computer Council in Agargaon. Brain Lab and Dhaka DocLab jointly organised the event, moderated by filmmaker and Dhaka DocLab Director Tareq Ahmed.

Luva Nahid Chowdhury, trustee of Dhaka DocLab and director general of Bengal Foundation, said AI was making filmmaking more accessible while creating new areas of expertise. She called for policies to protect the intellectual property and interests of filmmakers, actors and crew members.

Filmmaker Hasib Hasan Chowdhury described AI as “a tsunami” and urged greater training to help creators adapt. University of Dhaka teacher Khandaker Rubayet Mursalin also stressed the need for research into AI, audience responses and its impact.

Mamun-or-Rashid said AI should support rather than replace human creativity, while BFTI chief Abul Kalam Mohammad Shamsuddin highlighted its potential to lower production costs and promote Bangladeshi culture globally.

Participants also discussed copyright, technological capacity and preserving cultural identity as AI becomes more common in filmmaking.
