Two tourists were killed and five others seriously injured after a passenger jeep, locally known as a Chander Gari, overturned on the Tindu road in Thanchi upazila of Bandarban on Monday afternoon.
The accident occurred at around 4pm near the 21-kilometre point of the Alikadam-Thanchi road, Thanchi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kanan Sarkar said.
The deceased were identified as Md Jasim and Md Ziyabul, both residents of Khutakhali union in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
Four of the injured were identified as Md Rashel, Md Liton Shikdar, Kader Hossain and Shahjalal.
Border Guard Bangladesh personnel from Tindu camp rushed to the scene and began rescue operations after receiving information about the accident.
BGB Bolipara Zone Assistant Director Zakir Hossain said the rescue operation was carried out on the instructions of Zone Commander Lt Col Yasir Arafat Hossain.
He said BGB members recovered the bodies of the two tourists and rescued five critically injured people from the scene.
Local sources said the tourists had rented the Chander Gari in Alikadam and were travelling towards Tindu Ghat via the Alikadam-Thanchi road.
They suspected that the driver lost control of the vehicle on a sloped section of the Tindu alternative road, causing it to overturn.
The group had travelled from Khutakhali in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar, to visit tourist spots in Thanchi.
