Six more police officers, including a deputy inspector general (DIG), have been dismissed from service following their convictions in cases before the International Crimes Tribunal.
The Home Ministry’s Police-1 branch issued separate gazette notifications on Thursday ordering their dismissal under Section 42 of the Government Service Act, 2018.
The officers are DIG Syed Nurul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohammad Imrul, Superintendent of Police Md Asaduzzaman, Additional Superintendent of Police Md Abdullahil Kafi and Additional Superintendent of Police Shahidul Islam.
According to the notifications, Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam, a former additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Zone, was convicted by International Crimes Tribunal-1 and sentenced to death. He was serving as an additional superintendent of police at the In-Service Training Centre in Sylhet and was already under suspension.
His dismissal was made effective from 26 January.
Mohammad Imrul, a former assistant commissioner of DMP’s Ramna Zone and a currently suspended assistant superintendent of police with 8 Armed Police Battalion in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, was sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted by ICT-1.
His dismissal also took effect from 26 January.
Syed Nurul Islam, a former DIG of Dhaka Range and currently suspended DIG of Rangpur Range, was convicted by ICT-2 and sentenced to life imprisonment. His dismissal took effect from 5 February.
The same tribunal sentenced Md Asaduzzaman, a former Dhaka district SP who was later attached to the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sarda, Rajshahi, to life imprisonment.
He was also dismissed effective 5 February.
Md Abdullahil Kafi, a supernumerary SP and currently suspended additional SP in Dhaka district, was convicted by ICT-2 and sentenced to life imprisonment. His dismissal took effect from 5 February.
Shahidul Islam, a former additional SP of Savar Circle in Dhaka district and currently suspended additional SP with 16 Armed Police Battalion in Cox’s Bazar, was also sentenced to life imprisonment by ICT-2. His dismissal was made effective from 5 February.
The notifications were signed by Senior Secretary Manzur Morshed Chowdhury on behalf of the president and sent to the relevant government offices for information and necessary action.
The orders, issued in the public interest, came into effect immediately, according to the notifications.
