The Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET) Teachers’ Association has demanded the reinstatement of immediate past vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Abu Shadat Muhammad Sayem to the position of VC.
The teachers’ body has also called for the immediate withdrawal of the official notification issued regarding his exemption from the post.
These demands were articulated in a press release issued on Wednesday, signed by Prof Dr Mohammad Ahsan Ullah, President of the CUET Teachers’ Association, and Prof Dr Md Abdul Hannan, General Secretary of the organisation.
According to the press statement, the president appointed Prof Dr Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem as the VC of CUET on 27 July. The teachers’ association said that following his appointment, Prof Sayem established broad acceptability among the university’s teachers, students, officers, and employees through his dynamic leadership.
However, on Monday, a notification was published relieving him of the VC’s duties without citing any reason. His exemption after serving for merely 56 days has created deep disappointment and frustration among teachers, students, and other university stakeholders.
In response to the development, the CUET Teachers’ Association convened an emergency general meeting on Monday, where a unanimous decision was taken to demand his reinstatement.
The resolution passed by the association called for the prompt revocation of the notifications issued by the president concerning the appointment and exemption of the CUET vice-chancellor, alongside the reinstatement of Prof Dr Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem.
The press release further highlighted that revoking the Monday’s notification and reinstating Prof Sayem is imperative to maintain the momentum of CUET’s academic and administrative operations and to ensure the continuation of its development activities.
