Bangladesh suffered a 6-0 defeat to South Korea in the women’s football competition at the Asian Games on Thursday.
Bangladesh went into the break two goals down. They created two chances to reduce the gap early in the second half but failed to take either of them. South Korea then scored four more goals in the final 25 minutes at Nagai Stadium to complete the win.
Bangladesh coach Peter Butler made six changes to the starting XI after his side suffered a 10-0 defeat to North Korea in their opening match.
Bangladesh started with a defensive approach against a South Korean side ranked 94 places above them in the FIFA rankings. South Korea took the lead in the 16th minute through Kim Min-ji.
Bangladesh goalkeeper Rupna Chakma then made several saves to keep her side in the game. In the 33rd minute, Rupna stopped an effort following a corner before denying the rebound. Two minutes later, she produced another save to keep out a long-range effort from Choo Hyo-joo.
South Korea doubled their lead in the 42nd minute. Jeong Da-bin scored from a counter attack to make it 2-0. Bangladesh showed more attacking intent after the break. Monika Chakma and Ritu Porna Chakma tried to build attacks from deeper positions.
Anika Siddiqui had a chance in the 56th minute after getting into the South Korean box, but the goalkeeper stopped her. Two minutes later, Anika received a through ball from Shamsunnahar Jr and aimed for the top corner. The South Korean goalkeeper denied her again.
Choe Yu-ri made it 3-0 in the 65th minute. Ji So-yun added another in the 77th minute before Choe scored her second two minutes later.
Ko Yoo-jin completed the 6-0 win in added time. Bangladesh have now conceded 16 goals in their first two Asian Games matches without scoring. They will face Myanmar in their final group match on September 21.
