Major (retd) Mozaffar Hossain, who was arrested over his alleged involvement in the assassination of Ziaur Rahman, claimed that former Lt Col Motiur Rahman shot the then president.
During interrogation by the International Crimes Tribunal investigation agency, Mozaffar further said the then chief of army staff Hussain Muhammad Ershad had travelled to Chattogram by helicopter prior to the assassination.
Mozaffar’s interrogation took place at the investigation agency office on Sunday from 10am to 4pm. He will also be interrogated on Monday.
Tribunal Prosecutor Tanvir Hassan Zoha confirmed these details to TIMES of Bangladesh.
In the early hours of 30 May 1981, a section of disgruntled army officers assassinated then president Ziaur Rahman at the Chattogram Circuit House. Forty-five years after the assassination, Mozaffar was arrested from Banani in the capital on 15 July.
Prosecutor Zoha added that Mozaffar was also questioned regarding the July 2024 killings, and the details provided by him will be examined.
Mozaffar was shown arrested in a case involving charges of crimes against humanity during the July 2024 mass uprising.
On 23 July, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 issued an order in this regard, granting the investigation agency permission to take him into custody for two days of interrogation.
