Today marks the first death anniversary of legendary Lalon Sangeet singer Farida Parveen, who enriched Bangla music for decades by making Lalon’s songs a part of her spiritual practice and philosophy of life.
Known as the ‘Lalon Kanya’, Farida is being remembered through a special programme on Channel i today, Sunday, 13 September.
The special programme, directed and presented by senior journalist Abdur Rahman, will air on Channel i at 5:18pm. Farida will also be remembered on the programme Gaan Diye Shuru, which will be broadcast after the 7am news.
Farida began her musical career in 1968 by performing Nazrul Sangeet on Rajshahi Betar. She gained recognition among listeners in 1973 through patriotic songs. She later trained in Lalon Sangeet under Sadhak Mokshed Ali Shah.
From then on, Lalon’s songs became one of the main foundations of her musical journey. With her distinctive voice and performance style, she took Lalon Sangeet beyond Bangladesh and introduced it to a wider audience.
Farida’s contribution to Lalon Sangeet went beyond performing. To bring the tradition closer to the younger generation, she established the ‘Achin Pakhi School’.
In recognition of her long contribution to music, Farida received the Ekushey Padak in 1987. She was also honoured with the National Film Award and several other recognitions.
After suffering from kidney complications for a long time, Farida Parveen died at 10:15pm on 13 September, 2025.
A year after her death, her contribution to Lalon Sangeet remains undiminished. The songs of Lalon performed in her voice and the musical path she created through her lifelong practice continue to keep her memory alive among a new generation of artistes and listeners.
