Police have sought a seven-day remand for Haridas Chandra Tarani Das in a case filed over the alleged embezzlement of Tk75.86 lakh in the name of selling a flat.

Investigating Officer (IO) Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Masud Rana of Uttara West Police Station submitted the remand petition before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday.

The remand was sought to interrogate the accused, identify and arrest his absconding associates, recover two cheques, trace money transactions and gather important information related to the case.

The case was filed with Uttara West Police Station on 24 August.

According to the case statement, the plaintiff works for a private organisation. The second accused in the case, who was his college friend, introduced himself as the owner of a developer company and offered to sell him a flat in an under-construction building in Nikunja area of Khilkhet.

The price of the 1,580-square-foot flat was initially fixed at Tk80 lakh, but the accused offered it for Tk77 lakh citing their friendship.

The plaintiff later paid Tk15.85 lakh as booking money and in instalments, for which payment receipts were issued.

When the construction work reached its final stage, the accused demanded an additional Tk15 lakh. After the plaintiff paid the amount in cash, no receipt was provided. Instead, the accused handed over two cheques from his bank account.

However, when the accused allegedly delayed handing over the flat, the plaintiff sought a refund of the money. At that point, he was asked to contact another accused in the case.
