MTV Roadies could be heading to Netflix as the streaming giant reportedly looks to acquire the long-running reality show from JioStar in a deal worth around Rs 18 crore.
According to NDTV, citing a report by The Ken as quoted by Indiantelevision.com, Netflix is set to acquire the show from JioStar. Neither Netflix nor JioStar has officially announced the reported deal.
If completed, the deal would make Roadies the latest established television property to move to Netflix as the platform expands its reality television offering and seeks to widen its reach in the Indian market.
The reported acquisition comes soon after Netflix’s deal for MTV Hustle Season 5, which was reportedly valued at Rs 13 crore.
The latest season, Hustle 5 – Apna Homeground, features Badshah, Raftaar, EPR Iyer, Dino James, Dee MC and King, with Krissann Barretto as the host. The season premiered on Netflix in August, alongside its television run on MTV India and streaming availability on JioHotstar.
Roadies has an even longer television history. The reality show has been on air for more than two decades and has evolved considerably over the years.
It began as an adventure-based youth programme before developing into a franchise built around auditions, contestants, gang leaders, rivalries and controversies.
Over the years, several prominent television and entertainment personalities have been associated with the show, including Rannvijay Singha, Neha Dhupia, Prince Narula, Rhea Chakraborty and Elvish Yadav.
For now, however, the reported Rs 18 crore Netflix deal remains unconfirmed by both Netflix and JioStar.
