Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of Mohammad Mohsin alias Moushumi Hijra, a respected leader and “Guruma” of the third‑gender community, in Ambagan Railway Colony area under Khulshi Police Station in Chattogram.
The suspect is Md Momin alias Sheikh Roni, 34. Khulshi Police Station Sub‑inspector Golam Mohammad Nasim confirmed the arrest to TIMES of Bangladesh on Monday.
Momin, son of Safiqul Islam of Sabdalpur village in Nachol, Chapainawabganj, had been living at the home of hijra leader Falguni Hijra in Christian Para (Pathanpara) near Sagorika Stadium in Chattogram.
Police said Momin was identified from CCTV footage showing a suspect entering Mausumi’s room at 1:14am on Saturday wearing a white T‑shirt. He remained inside for nearly three hours and left at 3:52am. Based on this footage, police launched a special operation and arrested him.
The motive remains unclear, and the stolen money has not yet been recovered.
On Saturday morning, police recovered Mausumi’s body from her home in the hijra colony. She lived alone.
Investigators found that she had sold a cow the previous day and kept a large sum of money in her room. After the killing, the cash and two mobile phones were missing. Police suspect robbery was the motive.
Neighbours said Mausumi chatted with them until 1am Saturday before going to bed. Later, residents heard loud arguments from her room but assumed she was speaking with someone she knew.
On Saturday morning, when she did not wake up, community member Pakhi Rahman went to check. She found Mausumi lying dead, and police were then called.
Police said interrogation of Momin is ongoing, but the full motive and details of the murder remain under investigation.
