Ryan Reynolds’ new action comedy Mayday has opened to a mixed response from viewers, with the film earning a 66% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, writes Screen Rant.
The Apple TV film has collected more than 250 audience ratings so far, according to Rotten Tomatoes. The score makes Mayday Reynolds’ lowest-rated film among his titles listed on the platform, based on audience ratings.
The result comes despite a stronger response from critics. Mayday currently holds an 81% Tomatometer score from 77 critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
Reynolds stars as US Navy pilot Troy “Assassin” Kelly in the film. Set during the Cold War, the story follows Kelly after a secret mission goes wrong and he crash-lands in Soviet territory.
He then teams up with Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB agent played by Kenneth Branagh, as he tries to escape.
Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley directed the film. The pair also wrote the screenplay.
Mayday began streaming on Apple TV on 4 September. The film combines action and comedy while drawing on the style of 1980s action movies.
The gap between the film’s critics’ and audience scores marks a mixed start for Reynolds’ latest release. While critics have largely responded positively, viewers have given the film a more divided reception.
