Police have arrested two people and recovered firearms, ammunition and equipment used to manufacture weapons during a raid on an illegal arms-making workshop in Hathazari on Monday night.

The raid was carried out following a tip-off at around 8:20pm on Monday in Ward No 2 of Mirzapur Union under Hathazari upazila.

The arrested men were identified as Md Jamal Hossain, son of late Chan Miah from Mirzapur Ward No 2, and Md Kabir, son of late Abdul Malek from Barisal Colony in the same area.

According to police, a team raided the workshop after receiving information about illegal arms manufacturing and caught the two suspects red-handed while allegedly making firearms.

Police seized firearms, ammunition and raw materials used to manufacture weapons during the operation. However, the exact number and types of firearms and ammunition recovered could not be confirmed immediately.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Kazi Mohammad Tarek Aziz, Additional Superintendent of Police (Hathazari Circle).

The raiding team included Sub-Inspector Ashik, Assistant Sub-Inspector Imran, Constables Khaja Ochi Uddin and Abu Raihan of Hathazari Police Station, as well as members of the night mobile patrol team.

Police said preparations were under way to file a case against the arrested men under the Arms Act.

An investigation has also been launched to determine where the weapons were being supplied, who else was involved in the illegal network and how long the operation had been running.
