An unidentified man was killed and another sustained critical injuries after villagers allegedly beat them over suspected cattle theft in Badurgacha village of Kaliganj upazila in Jhenaidah early Saturday.
The incident occurred around 2am at the village under Barobazar Union, according to local sources.
The identities of both the deceased and the injured man could not immediately be confirmed.
The injured man was rescued in critical condition around 10am and taken to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for treatment.
Locals said village resident Nilufa Yasmin was asleep at home when she woke up around 2am and found the door of her room locked from outside.
Hearing her cries, neighbours came to her house and broke open the door.
After checking her cowshed, Nilufa found that one of her two cows was missing.
Villagers later searched the area and recovered the cow.
Following the incident, villagers caught two unidentified men on a nearby village road and allegedly beat them. One of the men died on the spot, while the other was seriously injured.
Md Mahfuz Hosein, additional superintendent of police of the Kaliganj-Sadar Circle, said police went to the spot after receiving the information, recovered the body and sent it to the morgue at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
He said legal action would be taken in connection with the death caused by the mob beating.
