A traffic police constable in Kushtia has been suspended following a Facebook post that allegedly defamed the historic July Movement, sparking widespread protests from students and local residents.
Farjul Islam Rony, posted in the Kushtia Traffic Division, was suspended on Saturday (July 5), confirmed Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mosharraf Hossain.
The controversy began on Tuesday afternoon when Farjul posted a derogatory comment on his personal Facebook account regarding the July Revolution — a move that quickly drew backlash.
The post provoked outrage, particularly among students, who blocked the Kushtia-Meherpur road in front of the district Superintendent of Police’s office, demanding Farjul’s arrest and exemplary punishment.
In response, authorities canceled Farjul’s leave, attached him to the police lines that same night, and formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter.
However, police say Farjul went into hiding shortly after making the post while on leave and has not returned to duty since.
“The investigation committee will determine the next course of action,” OC Mosharraf said.
Kushtia Traffic Police Inspector Sheikh Shahadat Ali said Farjul hails from Dahkula village of Shailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah district. He has been serving in Kushtia’s traffic division since July 13, 2023.
