Police recovered the body of young man from the abandoned Sudha Sadan building on Road 5 in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Shakil, 22, son of Sikandar Ali Matubbar of Mohammadpur area.
Although his identity was not immediately known, the Crime Scene Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) later confirmed it using fingerprint technology.
According to Sub-Inspector (SI) Ohidur Rahman of Dhanmondi Police Station, acting on a tip-off from locals, police entered the second floor of the building around 11am.
They found Shakil’s body hanging from a ventilator above a door, secured with a rope. “No marks of injury were found on the body,” the SI said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Shakil, the father of a 22-month-old child, had been residing in the Rayerbazar area of Hazaribagh.
He was reportedly struggling with drug addiction and was frequently unemployed.
Police further learned that he had recently been evicted from his home for failing to pay rent for four months, after which he began living as a vagabond.
Sudha Sadan, the residence of the late MA Wazed Miah, husband of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has remained abandoned since it was vandalised and looted on 5 August 2024.
Police suspect that Shakil may have entered the abandoned premises on Friday night to commit suicide.
The body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for an autopsy following the completion of legal formalities.
“The exact cause of death will be confirmed once the autopsy report is received,” police said, adding that the necessary legal processes are currently underway.
