Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Saturday advised Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports to keep hoisted local cautionary signal No 3 as squally weather may affect the ports and coastal areas.
The warning was issued due to a steep pressure gradient over the northwestern Bay of Bengal.
The Met Office said the low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bihar had weakened and merged with the monsoon trough.
The axis of the monsoon trough extends through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and northern Bangladesh to Assam, with one of its associated troughs stretching to the northwestern Bay.
The monsoon is active over northern Bangladesh, fairly active elsewhere in the country and strong over the northern Bay, it said.
Under the influence of the pressure gradient, squally winds may sweep across the seaports, the northern Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh at any time.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
In its 24-hour forecast from 6:00pm on Saturday, the Met Office said light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds were likely at most places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
Rain was also forecast at many places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at places in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.
Day and night temperatures may fall slightly across the country during the period.
