A clash between two factions of the BNP in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur left several vehicles, including those belonging to a local lawmaker and a BNP leader, vandalised on Friday evening.
The incident took place at the district council dak bungalow premises near Thana Mor area of the upazila, triggering tension in the locality.
The damaged vehicles included those of Jamalpur-2 MP and Islampur upazila BNP President Sultan Mahmud Babu and upazila BNP General Secretary Nurul Islam Nawab. No casualties were reported.
According to local residents, internal disputes between the two BNP leaders had been ongoing for several days.
On Friday evening, both leaders were present on the second floor of the dak bungalow when an argument broke out between their supporters outside.
The dispute soon escalated into a clash, during which the vehicles of the MP and the BNP leader, along with several motorcycles, were vandalised.
Police later reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Around 8pm, law enforcers escorted Sultan Mahmud Babu from the area and took him to his village home.
The incident sparked tension across Islampur, though police said the situation was later brought under control.
Repeated attempts to contact BNP General Secretary Nurul Islam Nawab for comments were unsuccessful.
Speaking to journalists, MP Sultan Mahmud Babu alleged that a group of miscreants vandalised his vehicle while he was meeting the newly appointed upazila nirbahi officer (UNO).
“The attackers must be identified quickly and brought under the law,” he said.
Islampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman said three vehicles, including those belonging to the MP and Nawab, as well as several motorcycles, were damaged in the incident.
“After receiving the information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The situation is now normal and peaceful,” he said.
