Grameenphone (GP) has introduced Instagram basic mode in Bangladesh, allowing subscribers to continue using selected Instagram features after their regular data balance runs out, the company said in a press release.
The service, launched in Dhaka on 9 June 2026, has been introduced in partnership with Meta and powered by Telenor Linx, making Grameenphone one of the first operators in Asia to offer the feature.
Instagram basic mode gives customers a limited browsing experience on the platform once their regular data balance is exhausted. The feature supports essential activities such as viewing notifications, reading captions, and browsing standard images and reels, helping users remain connected without interruption.
Customers who want to return to the full Instagram experience can buy a data package directly from within the app. Once a regular data pack is activated, Instagram automatically returns to full-feature mode, including high-resolution images, videos and standard functions.
Solaiman Alam, Chief Product Officer of Grameenphone, said the company was adapting its services to meet changing customer needs as digital lifestyles become more connected and uninterrupted social media access grows in importance.
“At Grameenphone, we believe in continuously adapting our offerings to meet the evolving needs of our customers. As digital lifestyles become increasingly connected and uninterrupted access to social media grows more important, ‘Instagram basic mode’ enables our customers to stay informed and connected even when they run out of data. This innovation reflects our commitment to delivering a seamless and customer-centric digital experience for everyone,” he said.
Grameenphone, part of Telenor Group, is a leading telecommunications service provider in Bangladesh with more than 84.2 million subscribers. Since its inception in 1997, the company has said its mission is to empower societies and minimise the digital divide.
The operator has built the country’s largest cellular network, covering more than 99 per cent of Bangladesh’s population. It said it remains committed to using connectivity to enhance customers’ digital lifestyles while continuing to innovate as a future-fit, customer-centric technology service provider.
Grameenphone is listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange and the Chittagong Stock Exchange.
