British Council, DU explore digital governance partnership

The British Council Bangladesh and the University of Dhaka (DU) discussed potential collaboration on digital governance in higher education, secure information exchange systems and interoperability between public and private institutions during a meeting held at the university on Tuesday.

A delegation led by Arsen Stepp, team leader of the Effective Governance Programme at British Council Bangladesh, met Prof Dr Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of the University of Dhaka, at his office. The discussion focused on strengthening digital transformation initiatives within the country’s higher education sector.

The University of Dhaka said in a press release that it has already moved several key services, including admission, examinations, certificate issuance and administrative functions, to digital platforms.

During the meeting, DU representatives informed the British Council delegation that academic and student records from recent years are being preserved digitally. They also highlighted ongoing initiatives to modernise certificate verification services and improve operational efficiency.

The two sides also discussed the possibility of connecting the university’s databases and digital services with relevant national and international institutions in the future.

Prof Dr Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane welcomed potential support from the British Council in advancing DU’s digital transformation efforts. He said relevant proposals would be considered at the university’s policy-making level.

The meeting was attended by Prof Dr Mosaddek Hossain Kamal, Director of the DU ICT Cell; Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmad, Acting Registrar; Dr Himadri Shekhar Chakrabarty, Acting Controller of Examinations; Md Enamul Haque, E-Governance Coordinator of the Effective Governance Programme at British Council; Sajia Sharmin, Citizen Engagement and Outreach Coordinator; and officials from both organisations.

The discussions come as universities increasingly seek secure digital infrastructure and integrated governance systems to improve service delivery, record management and institutional efficiency.
