A suspected member of a robbery gang, Abdul Mannan (26), was beaten and hacked to death by a mob in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Sunday morning.
The incident took place around 10:30am in the Kombonia area of Khuniapalong union. The deceased was the son of Moson Ali, a resident of the same locality.
Ramu Police Station’s Investigation Officer Mohammad Farid confirmed the incident.
According to locals, Mannan allegedly broke into a house and attempted to rape a young woman. When she resisted, he stabbed her. Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the scene and caught Mannan as he tried to flee. They then beat him severely and hacked him to death.
Law enforcement officials, including members of the army and police, later visited the scene.
Police said Mannan’s body was being sent to the Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. He had multiple cases filed against him, including for murder, robbery, and abduction. His father and three brothers are also allegedly involved in robbery.
SM Farid, president of the local BNP unit in Khuniapalong, said Moson Ali and his sons have operated an armed robbery gang for years, terrorizing highways and residential areas.
Just two days prior to the incident, villagers had staged a three-hour blockade on the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf highway, demanding the arrest of the Moson gang. Abdul Mannan was lynched only days after that protest.
