Yusuf Hossain Humayun, a member of the Advisory Council of the banned Awami League, senior Supreme Court lawyer, and former Member of Parliament, passed away on Saturday. He was 90.
He died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital at 6pm, Supreme Court lawyer Motahar Hossain Saju confirmed.
Humayun was a former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Barisal District Bar Association, a former vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council, and a former presidium member of the Awami League. He also served as the convener of the Bangabandhu Awami Ainjibi Parishad.
Born on 14 November 1936, in Sadar Upazila, Bhola, Humayun was a student leader who actively led from various battlefronts in Barisal and Dhaka during the Liberation War. He served as general secretary of the Dhaka University Chhatra League.
In the first national parliamentary election in 1973, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from the then Bakerganj-4 constituency as an Awami League candidate.
He was enrolled as a lawyer in 1966 and was listed to practice in the High Court Division in 1969.
His death marks the passing of a significant figure from the country’s early post-independence political and legal landscape.
