Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahid Uddin Swapan has emphasised the need for educating future generations in both digital literacy and moral values. Speaking at a national seminar and scholarship ceremony titled The Role of Moral Education in Implementing ‘Bangladesh First’ Philosophy, organised by the Bangladesh Students Welfare Trust at Dafodil Tower in Dhaka on Sunday, Swapan said that simply making young people technically proficient is not enough in today’s world of artificial intelligence and advanced technology. “Without a strong foundation of morality, it will be impossible to ensure the correct use of intellect and technology,” he said.
The Minister further highlighted that while society and the economy are rapidly digitalising, with personal connections and businesses increasingly relying on digital platforms, many national structures are yet to keep up with this transformation. He stressed the importance of the government swiftly adapting to a modern digital framework, while also focusing on promoting positive content on social media to shape the values of the youth. “We must ensure that our education system reflects moral education, so that students develop a refined mindset from childhood,” said Swapan.
In his speech, Swapan also pointed out that political leaders must maintain strong moral standards, referring to the political changes of August 5. “If a leader or a responsible person fails to uphold moral values, their consequences will not be favourable,” he said. He praised the country’s shift away from a culture of silence towards an open environment for free discussions and called on everyone to help create a moral society.
Professor Abdul Latif Masum, Vice-Chairman of Bangladesh Students Welfare Trust, chaired the event, with special guests including the Minister of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment, Nurul Haque. Professor Md Moinuddin Khan, Chairman of Bangladesh Students Welfare Trust and former Advisor to the Caretaker Government, and Md Sabur Khan, Chairman of Daffodil International University, also spoke at the seminar.
The event concluded with Swapan presenting scholarship cheques to deserving students.
