Britney Spears will avoid jail after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of reckless driving following her arrest on suspicion of DUI (driving under the influence), BBC reports.

A lawyer for the 44‑year‑old singer entered the plea in court on Monday. Spears was not required to attend.

She had been arrested 4 March on a southern California highway for driving her BMW “erratically at a high rate of speed,” authorities said. She later checked into a rehabilitation facility.

Her representatives called the incident “completely inexcusable.”

“Through her plea today, Britney has accepted responsibility for her conduct,” attorney Michael Goldstein said, adding she had taken steps toward positive change. He noted the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office reduced the charge and dismissed the DUI.

Spears will serve 12 months probation, complete a DUI class, and pay fines and fees under the “wet reckless” plea — standard for first‑time offenders with no crash, injury, or high blood‑alcohol level, prosecutors said.

Spears, one of the world’s most successful pop stars, rose to fame as a child with hits including Baby One More Time, Toxic, Womanizer and Stronger. She lived under a conservatorship controlled by her father for 13 years until 2021.
